The biggest lottery winner of all times who singlehandedly scooped the $1.53 billion Mega Millions jackpot of October 2018 has made some important donations to several charities. The South Carolina woman claimed her jackpot on March 4th, 2019 after carefully considering her new status. She chose the lump sum payout for the billion-dollar jackpot, which was worth $878 million. She also decided to keep her identity private, as South Carolina is one of the six American states that permits that.
South Carolina Winner Donates to Alabama Red Cross
Just around the time that she stepped forward to claim her jackpot, a tornado struck Alabama. “It just felt like we were having this great event when there were people suffering nearby,” she said through her lawyer, Jason Kurland. So she decided to do something about it.
The Mega Millions winner made a donation to the Alabama Red Cross to support tornado relief. She said that she does not want to make the sum that she had donated public. She spoke out about the matter to raise awareness for the cause and, hopefully, inspire others to make donations of their own.
Mega Millions Winner is a Full-Time Philanthropist
Her contribution to the Alabama Red Cross is not an isolated event. She has also donated to other charitable organizations, including the Ronald McDonald House of Charities in Columbia, South Carolina, the Art Center in Simpsonville, the One SC Fund for Hurricane Florence relief, and In The Middle – a charity helping breast cancer patients.
According to her latest statement, she aims to keep on donating to charities that are close to her heart. She said that her huge luck in the lottery “carries a tremendous social responsibility”, which she is determined to live up to. We applaud the initiative taken by the South Carolina winner.
