The Mega Millions has become one of America’s lottery titans by boasting some of the biggest jackpots in lottery history, but also by adding some of the most attractive features to the game. The Megaplier is the best multiplier in the lotto series because it can take large prizes to enormous amounts. Let us tell you how it works, how to play Mega Millions with it, and just how much it can do for your game!
What Is the Megaplier Anyway?
The Megaplier is the multiplier in the Mega Millions lottery. For a minimal investment, you can add this to your tickets to increase any secondary prizes you win 2, 3, 4, or even 5 times. It’s that simple. You pay a little bit to win so much more in the Mega Millions.
How Does the Megaplier Work?
The Megaplier number is drawn from a separate pool of 15 balls which includes 5 balls with 2x, 6 balls with 3x, 3 balls with 4x, and 1 ball with 5x. The drawn number determines how many times the multiplier will increase secondary prizes – 2, 3, 4, or 5.
Please note that players do not choose this number when they buy Mega Millions tickets. Therefore, they are not required to match the drawn Megaplier. Adding the multiplier guarantees the boost in prizes.
How Much Can the Megaplier Increase Your Prizes?
The Megaplier feature does not apply to the Mega Millions jackpot. However, it does apply to all the secondary prizes in the Mega Millions. In the table below, you can see how much the multiplier can increase each prize in the Mega Millions:
Match | Prize without Megaplier | Prize with Megaplier 2x | Prize with Megaplier 3x | Prize with Megaplier 4x | Prize with Megaplier 5x |
5 + MB | Min. $20 million | Min. $20 million | Min. $20 million | Min. $20 million | Min. $20 million |
5 | $1 million | $2 million | $3 million | $4 million | $5 million |
4 + MB | $10,000 | $20,000 | $30,000 | $40,000 | $50,000 |
4 | $5,000 | $10,000 | $15,000 | $20,000 | $25,000 |
3 + MB | $200 | $400 | $600 | $800 | 1,000 |
3 | $10 | $20 | $30 | $40 | $50 |
2 + MB | $10 | $20 | $30 | $40 | $50 |
1 + MB | $4 | $8 | $12 | $16 | $20 |
0 + MB | $2 | $4 | $6 | $8 | $10 |
If you match the 5 main numbers in the Mega Millions and win the second prize, the Megaplier can take your $1-million win to as much as $5 million. This is what makes this multiplier a feature that you simply cannot miss!
Megaplier Odds
As we have mentioned above, the Megaplier is drawn from a barrel with 15 balls. In the table below, you can see what the odds are for the multiplier to be either 2x, 3x, 4x, or 5x:
Megaplier | No. of Balls in Barrel | Odds |
2x | 5 | 1 in 3 |

Megaplier FAQ
We have gathered the most frequently asked questions about the Megaplier feature in the Mega Millions and we’re going to answer them for you. Take a look!
No, you do not need to have the Megaplier to be a Mega Millions jackpot winner, but you do need to have the Mega Ball. The multiplier is an optional feature that only refers to the secondary prizes in the game.
The Megaplier feature costs $1.00 for each ticket, but it does not bring any prizes by itself. The multiplier can only increase the secondary prizes won in the game. For instance, it can make the $1 million second prize worth $2, 3, 4, or even 5 million.
The Megaplier 2x means that all the secondary prizes in the game will be doubled. If a player wins the $10,000 3rd prize, for instance, and also has the multiplier on that ticket, and the drawn Megaplier is 2, then the player will take home $20,000.
You cannot choose the Megaplier for your ticket. You can only add this feature to the ticket and then the multiplier number will be drawn along with the lottery numbers from a separate barrel from a range of 2 to 5. The multiplier will be announced along with the Mega Millions results.
The Megaplier does not increase the Mega Millions jackpot. The multiplier only applies to the secondary prizes in the game and it can increase them 2, 3, 4, or 5 times.
No, you can’t add the Megaplier to your ticket retroactively. The multiplier must be added to the ticket before the draw for it to be taken into consideration.
